Respirator Basics
29 CFR 1910.134 · 29 CFR 1926.1153 · This talk in Spanish
Why it matters
A respirator with a gap is a placebo. Silica, welding fume, spray finishes, and moldy demo all call for respiratory protection, and the difference between protected and exposed comes down to the right cartridge, a real fit, and a clean seal. Beards and N95s do not mix.
Hazards
- ⚠ Wearing a dust mask where a half-face respirator is required
- ⚠ Wrong cartridge for the contaminant: dust filters against solvent vapors
- ⚠ Facial hair breaking the seal
- ⚠ Dirty, clogged, or expired filters increasing breathing effort
- ⚠ No medical evaluation before respirator use
Controls and safe practices
- ✓ Respirator use requires medical evaluation and fit testing first, per 1910.134(e) and (f).
- ✓ Match the filter: P100 for silica and dust, organic vapor cartridges for solvents, combination when both exist.
- ✓ Seal check every donning: cover and inhale, cover and exhale, feel for leaks.
- ✓ Clean-shaven where the mask seals. That is the rule that gets argued and the rule that matters most.
- ✓ Store respirators in a bag, not hanging on a nail in the dust; replace filters on schedule or when breathing hardens.
- ✓ Voluntary N95 use still requires the Appendix D information.
Crew discussion questions
- Which tasks today actually require respiratory protection?
- Who has been fit tested in the last 12 months?
- Are the right cartridges on hand for today’s exposures?
- Where are respirators being stored between uses?
